PhD Programme Content
Having developed your research agenda in the first year, you will spend the remaining three years working on your PhD project guided by appropriate supervisory teams. Approximately half of the projects will have direct industrial involvement with joint supervision provided by an industrial collaborator. Regular industry visits will provide experience working within the research team of the industrial partner. Below you can find an outline of the key areas of training throughout your PhD:
As well as completing the core training of the MRes it is important that you continue to develop your core skills and knowledge about statistics and operational research. Fundamental to STOR-i’s continual professional development (CPD) training is attendance at APTS and NATCOR courses and attendance at STOR-i Workshops and STOR-i Masterclasses. These are in addition to the broader training programme.
Public and Media Engagement
This will involve two one-day "Making Sense of..." workshops each year which will focus on communication with non-specialists, the production of press releases and the particular challenges facing STOR researchers committed to engagement. In addition to contributions from industrial partners, we will draw on the expertise of broadcasters and that of other prominent public figures in the STOR community.
Impact of ResearchThis will address issues of impact including the production of accessible software for new STOR methods, building research networks, successful knowledge transfer and relevance to society. This will have a strong input from industrial and academic collaborators.
Leadership and Project Management
This will look at issues in running successful research projects, with a particular focus on collaborative projects with scientific or industrial partners. There will also be a programme of speakers from industry, academic and public life speaking on leadership.
An introductory course on the computer programming language C++ is run at the beginning of the second year (first year of the PhD). This provides students with knowledge and experience of using a further programming language in addition to R which is introduced in the MRes year.
There will also be extensive opportunities to practice the implementation of these transferable skills through organised activities within STOR-i. In particular, extended visits to offices of our industrial partners or other universities are encouraged to develop crucial skills within industry. Over and above standard research support you will have access to substantial funds, through an internal competition, to support your research through these visits.
