Methods

The MRes component of the scheme will utilise a range of formative and summative assessment methods including:

  • Coursework- This can take the form of weekly exercises, end of module projects, reports, or group assignments.
  • Exams- Most modules will have final written examinations which take place in the summer of the academic year with the exception of MSCI536 where the exam in held in January.
  • Group work- For some modules there will be an assessed element related to team work, communication skills, software development and dissemination via web pages.
  • Research planning.

Weighting

The balance between coursework and examination varies between modules, as shown below. Marks are ratified by the Board of Examiners which meets in June. All MRes courses are at level 7 and credit for a module is given if the overall module mark is 50% or more.

MATH modules: taught by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics; MSCI modules taught by the Management Science Department, STOR modules taught by a combination of both departments; (1) National Credit Framework; (2) STOR601 assessment of coursework is a mix of group and individual work; (3) STOR601- “other” method of assessment is based on observation of team work; (4) by research plan and supervisor's report; (5) MATH651, MATH653, MATH654 - assessment will be through a combination of summer exam (80%) and end of module test (20%). Submission of Coursework

All coursework needs to be submitted with a cover sheet stating the work you are submitting is your own work. In addition to this requirement there is a distinction between submission of project and non-project coursework which must be adhered to:

  • For all non-project coursework submit the work to the relevant person (usually the lecturer or tutor on the taught course) with the cover sheet attached.
  • For all project coursework you must submit an electronic copy by the required deadline to STOR-i’s Administrator.

Exams

The MSCI536 exam is January. All other examinations for modules studied in a particular academic year will be scheduled for Term 3 of that year in May and June. Provisional exam results will be communicated directly to students in late June. Final results will be communicated by post in early October.

PhD proposal arrangements

The PhD proposal component carries a weighting of 60 credits at level 7. Each proposal will be double-marked, and a provisional mark agreed between the two markers. A copy of each proposal and a brief report (including a provisional mark) agreed between the two internal markers will then be sent to the external examiner in advance of the final meeting of the Board of Examiners in late September. The deadline for submission of the proposal is early September.

Board of Examiners

The Board of Examiners consists of:

  • STOR-i’s Executive Committee;
  • academic staff of the University who have lectured a contributory module(s) during the year in question;
  • other statistics and OR staff from the Departments of Mathematics and Statistics and of Management Science;
  • the external examiner for the MRes.
  • This Board is chaired by STOR-i’s Director and serviced by its Administrator.
