I have been employed in the Department of Management Science since completing my PhD in 1997. Since 2007, my job title has been “Professor of Optimisation”. Although my focus is on optimisation, I sometimes teach other quantitative subjects, such as forecasting, inventory control or stochastic processes.

I work on techniques for solving large and difficult optimisation problems to proven optimality or near-optimality. Such problems have a host of important applications in operational research, statistics, finance, engineering, computer science and the physical sciences. I am mainly interested in discrete (a.k.a. combinatorial) optimisation problems, but I also have some interest in non-convex continuous (a.k.a. global) optimisation problems.
