I am a lecturer in the Department of Management Science. I currently teach a range of courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level from statistics and optimization through to programming and even negotiation.
My research focuses on the (optimal) control of complex stochastic systems. Such systems are important in terms of both a theoretical and a practical perspective as they arise in many different organisational settings and impact upon our everyday lives. For example, website optimization, portfolio management, transport logistics, inventory and revenue management and call-centre management to name but a few. However, the models we are able to develop to understand such problems are notoriously challenging to solve. Approaches known collectively as Approximate Dynamic Programming have been proposed to provide solutions to these challenging problems and are of primary interest in my current research.
